Shilling applauds ruling in voter rights case

Federal Court slams GOP efforts to disenfranchise voters

MADISON, WI – After U.S. District Judge James Peterson struck down a series of Republican laws designed to disenfranchise Wisconsin voters, Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) released the following statement:

“The right to vote is a fundamental freedom and cornerstone of our democracy. There is nothing American about denying seniors, veterans, students and people with disabilities their constitutional right to vote.

“Gov. Walker and Republican lawmakers have tried to create numerous barriers to vote by extending Election Day lines, shifting more costs onto working families and making it harder for Americans to have their votes counted. In a clear-cut ruling, the court determined that Republican efforts to suppress and disenfranchise voters is a clear violation of our nation’s laws and our shared democratic values.

“Today’s ruling is a major victory for all Americans. Our democracy is strongest when everyone is allowed to participate and voice their opinions in free, fair and accessible elections. Rather than making it harder to vote, we should focus on working together to empower Wisconsin citizens, expand voting rights and increase voter participation.”
