Senator Harris Dodd Statement on King v. Burwell Decision

MADISON –State Senator Nikiya Harris Dodd (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling upholding the Affordable Care Act (ACA)’s provisions that allow the federal government to provide nationwide subsidies to help individuals buy health insurance:

“Today’s decision is a victory for individuals across the nation and across Wisconsin.  Over 180,000 Wisconsin residents are covered through the federal marketplace, and a repeal of the ACA’s health care subsidies would have been a devastating blow to the vast majority of these individuals.

“The ACA has given individuals in my district an opportunity to obtain affordable health care coverage that they otherwise would have had to live without.  Today’s decision solidifies their ability to keep this coverage. A key component of building a healthy economy is promoting healthy workers and families.  The decision today not only provides security and relief to individuals across the state, but it also sends a clear message that the ACA is not going away.

“I praise the U.S. Supreme Court for their thoughtful analysis of such an important issue, and commend them for their clear understanding that the ACA subsidies are meant to help individuals across the nation.

“The court’s ruling once again highlights Governor Walker’s flawed leadership in opposing affordable health care for Wisconsin residents. It’s time for Governor Walker to take a stand for healthy Wisconsin workers and take the federal money to strengthen BadgerCare, lowering health care costs for everyone in our state.”
