Unconstitutional GOP abortion restrictions rejected

Sen. Shilling issues statement supporting U.S. Supreme Court decision

MADISON – After the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Republican abortion restrictions and rejected an appeal by Gov. Walker, Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) released the following statement:

“I am pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court sided with Wisconsin families and rejected Gov. Walker’s attempt to restrict access to reproductive care. No woman should be forced to navigate a costly, unnecessary and degrading political maze in order to access to safe, legal abortion care.

“While this ruling strikes down the most burdensome and unconstitutional Republican abortion restrictions contained in 2013 WI Act 37, there is still more work ahead. Wisconsin Democrats remain committed to protecting a woman's freedom to choose and the ability of doctors to deliver the highest standard of medical care. Rather than wasting time and taxpayer dollars catering to special interests, the majority party should work with Democrats to expand economic opportunities, increase access to quality health care and strengthen Wisconsin’s middle class.”
