Democrats Call on GOP to Halt Vet Home Raids

Leaders Renew Call for Accountability at Veterans’ Nursing Homes

MADISON – Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) and Assembly Democratic Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) issued the following joint statement regarding The Capital Times’ investigation into Wisconsin’s veteran nursing homes. The investigative report chronicled serious accounts of mismanagement and staffing shortages at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King resulting in frail residents receiving inadequate care, even while the Walker Administration raids millions of dollars each year from nursing homes to backfill budget deficits.

“It is absolutely tragic and heartbreaking to learn that due to the failed leadership of Gov. Walker and legislative Republicans, our veterans’ homes are providing substandard care to the men and women who have dedicated their lives to serving our country. It is even worse to learn that the Walker Administration and legislative Republicans have swept these problems under the rug for years.

“Until these issues can be fully investigated and resolved, we are calling on legislative Republicans and the Department of Veterans Affairs to stop all future funding raids from our state’s veteran nursing homes. We also echo Senator Julie Lassa’s call for an independent federal investigation of the situation at the King Veteran Home.

“We should make sure that our veterans receive the highest level of quality care possible. For months, Democratic leaders have called for an audit of our veteran’s homes – and we continue to request an independent review of these troubling reports.

“After months of Republican stonewalling, we need immediate action to protect our most vulnerable veterans. We won’t stand by silently as our most decorated veterans risk further injury and neglect in their time of greatest need. We stand by the hardworking people at the King Veteran Home who are also struggling under the neglectful management and failed leadership of Gov. Walker and legislative Republicans.”

During the 2015-17 budget process, Republican lawmakers blocked a Democratic proposal that would have prevented administrative funding raids of veteran nursing homes and required legislative oversight of all veteran nursing home fund transfers.
