Statement from Senator Hansen:  Governor continues to ignore 1 million Wisconsin residents with student loans

“Today we were officially introduced to the specialist whose job it will be to tell students that, unlike their friends in other states, this Governor cares more about the profits of corporate lenders on Wall Street than he does the financial future of Wisconsin graduates.

“Once again the Governor has chosen to ignore the nearly 1 million Wisconsin residents who have over $19 billion in student loan debt, much of it at high interest rates forcing many of them to forego buying a new car, their first home, or even getting married and starting a family.

“If the Governor were truly serious about helping the 1 million Wisconsin residents struggling with student debt he would support Democratic efforts to help them refinance their loans at lower interest rates—like Minnesota, Rhode Island and other states are already doing.”
