A written transcript of the address is below:
“This is State Senator Nikiya Harris Dodd. Today, as we remember Juneteenth Day, we honor and celebrate the historic struggle our ancestors faced for the promise of freedom. On this day in 1865, freedom from slavery became real to thousands of slaves living in Galveston, Texas, as union troops marched into the city to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.
“Juneteenth Day is recognized as a day of reflection on the freedoms we enjoy as American citizens. However, I wonder what our ancestors would say today to the fact that, over 150 years later, Wisconsin incarcerates more black males than any other state in the nation, or that our education system boasts some of the widest racial gaps in test scores in the country?
"Freedom is an integral part of our nation’s legacy, and the struggle for freedom can only end when men and women across the state have the freedom to find meaningful employment, to provide quality education to their children, and to live in peace.
“My colleagues and I remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that every family in Wisconsin has the freedom to achieve the American dream. On this Juneteenth Day, we celebrate the freedoms achieved by the generations before us and strengthen our determination to provide better opportunities to the generations of tomorrow. Thank you.”
