Senator Kapenga Statement on Nashville Shooting
[Madison, WI] — State Senator Chris Kapenga (R-Delafield) released the following statement regarding the deadly shooting at Covenant School in Nashville:
“This tragedy has hit very close to home when we received a call from our daughter yesterday that kids in her community had just been killed. Last summer, we sat in a pew of that church and walked on the front steps of that building for our daughter’s pinning ceremony as she graduated from nursing school.
“We cried together for the innocence that was just destroyed. The innocence lost is seen in the loss of life, the loss of family, and the possible lifelong loss of stability for the survivors who witnessed the tragedy.
“As a community, state, and nation, we are united in anger, sadness, and brokenness so it’s a good time to reflect. In the midst of our unified pain, it’s time to push pause on the division that continues to grip us, and push pause on allowing the forces out there across the spectrum who are already working to take advantage of the loss of innocent life to further their goal of division, which is second in callousness and cowardliness only to the event itself. If evil sees events like this further erode our unity and grow our hatred towards each other, it only grows more emboldened.
“So let’s not allow it. Let us become more united through our pain, sorrow, and sadness. Maybe, if we can individually recognize how united we are, we can collectively begin to turn the tide of events like this that are rooted in our collective division.”
