Transit Equity Day
February 4th, 2025
Transcript
Hi Folks, this is your State Senator, Jeff Smith, checking in for the Chippewa Valley. Today we are joining leaders from around the globe in celebrating the birthday of Rosa Parks with our Transit Equity Day proclamation.
Today we honor her legacy for promoting equitable, accessible and inclusive transit systems.
Unfortunately, disparities in access to public transportation persist today, disproportionately affecting communities of color, economically disadvantaged individuals, and people with disabilities.
I’m here in the north hearing room at the Wisconsin State Capitol. This room honors Wisconsin's rich transportation history. The murals in the room spanning earliest forms of transportation show just how important accessible, reliable and equitable transportation is for everyone.
It's not just about getting from one place to another. It is essential infrastructure for our whole society to function, just like roads, bridges, and utilities. And it’s a lifeline to a better future for many members of our communities.
Equitable Public transit is a basic right that ensures access for people of all income levels, races, and abilities, including those who rely on paratransit services.
This is Senator Jeff Smith signing off for the Chippewa Valley wishing you a happy Transit Equity day in Wisconsin.
