Postpartum Care is a Right
Transcript
Hi, folks. This is State Senator Jeff Smith, checking in for the Chippewa Valley.
Yesterday, the State Senate did something that’s rare these days — we came together, Republicans and Democrats, and passed a bipartisan bill to expand postpartum Medicaid coverage beyond 60 days to a full year. I was proud to vote yes.
I was also proud to vote yes for this same bill last session. After clearing the Senate, the bill didn’t even get a public hearing in the Assembly. I hope that doesn’t happen again this year, but honestly, based on how many times we have tried to pass this bill, I wish I could offer more optimism to struggling mothers.
This bill gives moms the time and support they need to recover and to be there — healthy and strong — for their children. Whether it’s dealing with complications like heart conditions or postpartum depression, or managing chronic illnesses that could become worse without care — these are real issues with real consequences.
So now, it’s up to Republicans in the State Assembly again. Speaker Vos has said he doesn’t envision supporting it. For all of you who understand the importance of postpartum care, I strongly encourage you to reach out to your state representatives. Tell them moms shouldn’t be cut short for critical care.
This is long overdue and it’s the right thing to do for Wisconsin families.
