Citizens United
Transcript
Hi, folks. This is your State Senator Jeff Smith, checking in for the Chippewa Valley.
I want to talk to you about something that’s threatening the heart of our democracy — Citizens United.
Since that Supreme Court decision in 2010, corporations and billionaires have been able to pour unlimited money into our elections.
That’s not democracy — that’s legalized bribery.
Today, my Democratic colleagues and I introduced a resolution to give you the power to speak up. If the Legislature passes this resolution, voters will get to answer a simple question on their ballot on November 3rd, 2026: Should Congress overturn Citizens United?
This advisory referendum will ask if you believe constitutional rights belong only to real people — not corporations. And if you agree that money is not speech — and that political spending should be limited to protect your voice.
It’s time to put people over profits, and voices over dollars. Let’s give power back to the voters, where it belongs.
Let’s reclaim our democracy — together!
This is just the beginning, folks, so stay tuned. This is Senator Jeff Smith signing off.
