Sen. Smith's Statement on Gov. Evers' 2024 State of the State

MADISON – Governor Tony Evers delivered the 2023 State of the State Address this evening. Senator Jeff Smith (D–Brunswick) released the following statement in response to the address:

“Governor Evers has creatively maneuvered his way over political hurdles put up by Republicans time and time again. Despite these attempts, the Governor continues to deliver. I’m especially excited to see the Governor’s plan to expand contraception access, postpartum coverage after pregnancy, continued investment in affordable housing, plans to address generational workforce challenges and new mental health initiatives.

“If half the effort spent to derail the Governor was spent on working with him we would could take Wisconsin to next level. Governor Evers successfully ushered big-ticket policy initiatives through the legislature over the course of the last year and he should be proud of those efforts to move Wisconsin forward.

“The Governor’s call to capitalize on bipartisan momentum to solve our child care crisis, overcome PFAS pollution and finally create a paid family leave program are all great examples of opportunities that lie ahead to help Wisconsin become a leader.”
