Hi, this is Senator Jeff Smith Checking in for the Chippewa Valley.
Big news out of Madison this week from Governor Tony Evers. The Governor created the Office of Violence Prevention. This is a good step in the right direction in the wake of tragedies here in Wisconsin and across the country.
When these events happen, we all feel helpless and our hearts ache for the victims. Preventing violence from the start should be our priority and this is a good first step to stop violence before it occurs.
Whether it’s domestic violence, school shootings, suicide or other forms of violence that tears our communities apart – it needs to stop before it starts. Having a dedicated office with professionals committed to preventing violent behaviors is a simple thing we can do as your elected officials. I support and commend the Governor on his latest commitment in the face of unfathomable tragedies and I challenge Republicans in control of the Legislature to make this a priority in their budget work this spring.
Stay tuned for more to come as the budget process gears up. This is Senator Jeff Smith signing off for the Chippewa Valley.
