Cuts to Medicaid and SNAP Program

Transcript:

Hi, folks. This is your State Senator Jeff Smith, checking in for the Chippewa Valley.

On May 22nd, Congressional Republicans passed a big tax break for the ultrawealthy by a single vote – this bill betrays working families so the rich can get richer.

To fund their mega tax breaks, they slash healthcare and food assistance funding.

The staggering $700 billion cut to Medicaid is the largest cut to the program in U.S. history.

It also cuts $267 BILLION from SNAP, our FoodShare program, right when families are already struggling to afford groceries.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, 228 thousand Wisconsinites will lose their health coverage under this bill. That includes 81 thousand losing their Affordable Care Act plans and 147 thousand losing Medicaid coverage.

This handout to ultra wealthy Americans  shifts the burden onto the states and leaves us with less money for our schools and child care programs.

Wisconsinites deserve better. It’s immoral to fund tax breaks to the rich on the backs of people struggling to afford health insurance or those who can’t afford groceries.

Now it’s up to the U.S. Senate. Call Senators Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin. Tell them to stop this bill.

This is Senator Jeff Smith, signing off.
