Efforts to Advance Nuclear Power in Wisconsin Take Next Step
Madison, WI — Today, State Representatives David Steffen (R-Howard), Shae Sortwell (R-Two Rivers), and State Senator Julian Bradley (R-New Berlin) testified at a public hearing on a bipartisan pair of bills that will move Wisconsin forward in the nuclear energy space. Under the proposals, the state will conduct a nuclear power siting study and host the Wisconsin Nuclear Power Summit.
“I am thrilled to see so much interest and momentum in advancing nuclear power in Wisconsin. Our state, with its robust research, development and manufacturing sectors is in a position to take full advantage of this future energy source. A siting study and summit are key steps we can take today to move nuclear power forward in Wisconsin,” said Rep. Steffen.
Under Assembly Bill 108, the state would conduct a nuclear power siting study in order to identify potential host communities for nuclear power generation.
"Wisconsin must act now to embrace nuclear energy as a clean, reliable solution to our growing power needs,” noted Sen. Bradley. “Our siting bill lays the groundwork so that our state is ready to embrace innovative nuclear technologies that will power our economy for decades to come."
Under Assembly Bill 132, the state will host the Wisconsin Nuclear Power Summit. The event will bring together industry leaders, subject-matter-experts, investors and public policy officials to provide participants with education and information sharing opportunities. The Summit will advance nuclear power and fusion energy, while simultaneously shining a light on Wisconsin’s leadership in this space.
“With the emergence of AI and the dramatic increase in energy demands, it is critical that Wisconsin stay on the forefront of safe, clean, and reliable nuclear energy,” said Rep. Sortwell.
The bills are now available for a committee vote before advancing in the legislative process.
