Fighting Drunk Driving 

The recent crash in Racine that took the lives of a father and daughter is a tragic reminder that drunk driving is still a deadly problem in our state. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims' family and loved ones. No family should have to experience that devastation or grief.

Drunk driving has been a problem that has plagued Wisconsin for years, and far too many lives have been lost. Although there is no easy fix, this is simply not something we can ignore. Last year, my colleagues and I were able to take steps in the right direction by increasing the punishment for repeat drunk driving and creating a 24/7 Sobriety Pilot program in an effort to increase compliance. These reforms are encouraging, but more needs to be done.

This legislative session, we will continue to address driver personal responsibility by introducing legislation designed to continue these reforms. The first, in part, would permanently revoke an offender's operating privilege for anyone convicted of a combination of five impaired operating offenses. The second piece of legislation is a bill that assigns required use of an ignition interlock device to the OWI offender, not the vehicle they own. Failure to be compliant would result in criminal penalty for the repeat violator. The goal is to provide all drivers the ability to be voluntarily compliant and give Law Enforcement and the Courts the tools to more readily enforce the law and impose more serious sanctions on those who choose not to be responsible. Wanggaard Given "Working for Wisconsin" Award


 
I was recently honored to receive the "Working for Wisconsin" award for efforts to better Wisconsin's economic climate. The award is given by Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) which is the state's chamber of commerce and largest business trade association. The recipients of the award are chosen based on their support of issues that matter to job creators and affect the business climate in Wisconsin.

I am humbled to receive this recognition, and I look forward to continuing to work to improve Wisconsin's economic climate and help grow jobs in our great state.
 

Karcher Middle School Visit

It was great visiting with Karcher Middle School students this week when they came from Burlington to tour the Capitol. This is a great group of eighth graders, and I enjoyed getting to chat with the kids about the responsibilities of being a State Senator. Hope you enjoyed the day Karcher - come back and see us again soon! 
 

Take a Holiday Tour of the Executive Residence

Each year, the Wisconsin Governor's Mansion is elegantly decorated for the Christmas season, and the public is able to enjoy the beauty of the Residence while taking in some holiday cheer. Mark your calendars for one of the open house dates, and if you come on a weekday, don't forget to stop by my office located at 319 South in the State Capitol! Here is the tour schedule for this year:

2016 Holiday Open House Schedule:
  • Saturday, December 3 – 10:00 a.m. – Noon 
  • Wednesday, December 7 – Noon – 2:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, December 8 – Noon – 2:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 10 – 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, December 14 – Noon – 2:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, December 15 – Noon – 2:00 p.m.
The Executive Residence is located at 99 Cambridge Road on Madison’s northeast side in the Village of Maple Bluff. Learn more about the Wisconsin Executive Residence here. Driving directions can be found here. 

Tours are free of charge, and cameras are allowed. Parties of 20 or more are asked to make a reservation by calling (608) 246-5501. Parking is available directly outside the residence gates. The Executive Residence is handicapped accessible, and handicapped parking is available upon request at the time of arrival.

Governor Scott Walker and First Lady Tonette Walker have partnered with Second Harvest Foodbank and the Wisconsin Department of Tourism’s Big Bundle Up Campaign again to promote the season of giving this holiday. Non-perishable food items and warm weather items, including new or gently used mittens, hats, scarves, coats, sweaters, jackets, and snow pants are accepted at the Executive Residence before and after the tours. All items will be donated to those in need.
