Good Economic News

I'm excited to share some great economic news with you this week. I am happy to see our fiscally responsible policies paying off, and the state is looking good.

Unemployment:
This week, the Department of Workforce Development announced that Wisconsin's
unemployment rate is at the lowest point since January 2001. Wisconsin's unemployment rate has now declined to 4 percent (well below the national average) and our state now has the lowest number of unemployed workers since February 2001.

Data released by the Department also shows continuing unemployment claims in Wisconsin the lowest in at least 30 years! Beyond that, Wisconsin was one of only 10 states with an annual average unemployment rate in 2015 lower than 2007, the year the Great Recession began. This is very encouraging, and these are just some of the highlights from the report. For even more good news, read the Department's press release here.

Budget Surplus:
The good news continues with new projections of a state budget surplus that were released this week by the Legislative Fiscal Bureau. The report shows that we are expected to end this fiscal year with a projected $427 million surplus for our state. In addition, Wisconsin is expected to bring in $454 million more than previously estimated over the next three years.

This is impressive, and means we will head into the next biennial budget in great shape. We should all be proud to live in a state that puts fiscally conservative policies in place. I am looking forward to continuing this path of success by passing policies that save taxpayer dollars, reduce inefficiencies, and limit red tape.

More Jobs Coming to Southeastern Wisconsin

Two companies recently announced that they will be opening new facilities right here in the 21st Senate District. On January 10, New Glarus Brewing Co. announced it will buy all of its bottles from the Ardagh glass manufacturing plant in Burlington. The Ardagh plant is Wisconsin's only glass plant, and the decision means $6 million of business will be kept in Wisconsin.

On January 16, InSinkErator announced it plans on moving its headquarters to a new $24 million, 85,000 square foot facility in Mount Pleasant. The company chose Mount Pleasant after considering other areas of the state, or even relocating to St. Louis.

This recent news is part of a string of jobs announcements over the past few months, and it is wonderful to see these companies committing to Wisconsin. I couldn't be happier that companies are thriving in southeastern Wisconsin and new companies continue to bring good paying jobs and revenue to our area!

Take Your Legislator to Work

I recently had an opportunity to work with Mike Williams as a greeter at Sam's Club in Kenosha during "Take Your Legislator to Work Day." This is an awesome program by the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities, to raise awareness about the importance of integrated employment for people with disabilities.

I am honored to be a part of this event every year, and I had a wonderful time shadowing Mike and getting to know him. Thank you for the opportunity!
