Union Grove Veterans Day Ceremony

On Friday, November 11, I had the opportunity to help thank the heroes in our community at the Union Grove Veterans Day Ceremony.  Freedom is what makes our country the greatest on earth, and we owe that freedom to the men and women who put everything on the line to defend it.

On Veteran's Day, and every day, I extend my sincere gratitude and respect to every veteran and those currently serving in the armed forces. Thank you for every sacrifice and for your countless acts of bravery. America truly remains the land of the free because of selfless acts of the brave.

Local Spotlight - Vance's Toy Voyage

This week, I am featuring an exceptional young man who is making a difference for children who are battling illness. When Vance Wilks (pictured above with his family) was just 7 years old, he began having seizures that led doctors to discover a benign brain tumor. During his treatment, Vance noticed there weren’t many good toys to play with at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and wanted to help.  Vance and his family started a toy drive,“Vance’s Toy Voyage,” and they have collected thousands of toys for this great cause.

I had the honor of meeting Vance for the first time last fall, and I am so impressed with this young man. I was happy to help out by hosting a collection site for the Toy Voyage, and am glad to hear over 700 toys were collected across the donation sites this year. It is just awesome to see this family making such a difference in our community, and I know this effort is going to grow and grow. Way to go, Vance - keep up the good work!

Wanggaard Named Majority Caucus Vice-Chair

I was recently honored to be re-elected Majority Caucus Vice-Chair by my peers in the Senate. I am thankful for the opportunity to fill this leadership role once again, and I am looking forward to a productive legislative session.

Riverview Students Work to Reduce Eye Disease

Last week, I enjoyed a visit from an impressive group of students from Riverview School in Silver Lake. The students came to present their "Project Citizen"  proposal about spreading awareness about the importance of eye examinations for infants. The students won 1st place in the state competition with their project, which is aimed at preventing unnecessary eye diseases and even blindness.

It was wonderful to hear from the students and see how passionate they are about this issue. Congratulations to Jordyn Delargy, Kaleb Gendron, Hannah Andrea, Veda Gross, Mason Cummings, Zach Colletti, Teagan Maki and Emma Spive and teachers Cari McBurney and Stacy Evans on all your hard work. I look forward to working with them on this issue during the upcoming legislative session.

Deer Hunting Season Begins

It's that time of year again, and Deer Hunting Season kicks off tomorrow, Saturday, November 19. To help make the hunt successful, the Department of Natural Resources has published several online tools including key changes for the season and an interactive deer map to outline which tags and seasons are offered where you hunt. For a full list of topics, you can visit the DNR's hunting website here. Good luck, stay safe, and I hope you find that 30 pointer this year!
