Be Ready for Voter ID

The November 2016 General Election will be the largest election to date with the Voter ID requirement in place. With the election coming up, we want to make sure everyone is prepared to exercise their right to vote this fall.

Most Wisconsinites already have a WI Driver's License, which is all you need. If you don't have an ID, getting one is free and easy. If you have questions on what IDs are acceptable, how to get a free state ID card or info for absentee voters, you can find all of those answers at www.bringitwisconsin.com.

The voter ID law is a common sense measure to help ensure integrity in our election process and holds true to our principle of one-person, one-vote. I'm very glad this measure will be in place this fall to protect every legal voter.

Resources to Combat Veteran Suicide

Veteran suicide is a terrible epidemic and statistics show it is getting worse. Veteran suicide nationwide has increased from 22 to 27 veterans daily. Male veterans are twice as likely as their civilian peers to die by suicide, and 69% of Veteran suicides are among those 50 years and older. Women are not immune to the epidemic, and suicide deaths among female veterans increased by 40% over the last decade. In Wisconsin from 2007-2011, 680 veterans died by suicide which accounted for 19% of all suicides among people aged 18 and older.

This is not a problem we can ignore in our state, and the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs recently launched an initiative to end veteran suicide. The Zero Veteran Suicide Initiative seeks to empower veterans and our communities to prevent veteran suicide through proactive resourcing and education. Suicide is preventable, and the WDVA lists the following resources for Veterans and their families. If you, or someone you know, are a Veteran struggling with mental health issues, please use these valuable resources:

-Veterans Benefits Resource Center, at WisVets.com or by calling 1-800-947-8387

-Veterans Crisis Line, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, by calling 1-800-273-8255 and pressing 1 or texting 838255

-Vets4Warriors Personalized Peer Support 24/7 at vets4warriors.com or by calling 1-855-838-8255

Would you Like a Free Legislative Blue Book?

One of the services I am proud to offer my constituents is free State of Wisconsin Blue Books. These legislative guides contain some great information about the three branches of government, a copy of the Wisconsin Constitution, contact information for elected officials and statistics about our state.

To receive your free copy of the 2015-16 State of Wisconsin Blue Book, just send me an email to Sen.Wanggaard@legis.wi.gov with your name and mailing address and "blue book" in the subject line.

Grants Coming to Burlington, Racine and Pleasant Prairie

Three visitor centers in our communities were recently awarded a Tourism Information Center (TIC) grant from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. The grant program supports tourism industry partners that provide services for meeting, greeting and directing travelers.

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism announced the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce received a $2500 grant for the visitor center located at the chamber of commerce office in downtown Burlington, Real Racine received a $2500 grant for the visitor information center located on I-94 at Hwy 20 in Racine County, and Visit Kenosha received a $7500 grant for the visitor information center located on I-94 in Pleasant Prairie.

Tourism is a great way to draw dollars into southeastern Wisconsin. The TIC grant program is a highly competitive program, and I am glad to see these dollars going to great services in our area!
