Resources to Combat Veteran Suicide
Veteran suicide is a terrible epidemic and statistics show it is getting worse. Veteran suicide nationwide has increased from 22 to 27 veterans daily. Male veterans are twice as likely as their civilian peers to die by suicide, and 69% of Veteran suicides are among those 50 years and older. Women are not immune to the epidemic, and suicide deaths among female veterans increased by 40% over the last decade. In Wisconsin from 2007-2011, 680 veterans died by suicide which accounted for 19% of all suicides among people aged 18 and older. This is not a problem we can ignore in our state, and the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs recently launched an initiative to end veteran suicide. The Zero Veteran Suicide Initiative seeks to empower veterans and our communities to prevent veteran suicide through proactive resourcing and education. Suicide is preventable, and the WDVA lists the following resources for Veterans and their families.
