New 24/7 Sobriety Program

CBS 57 recently did a story on the 24/7 Sobriety Program that is coming to Racine County (see video above). This great program gives drunk drivers the opportunity to choose to go through daily sobriety testing and it has been shown to reduce repeat drunk driving by almost 50% and even reduce domestic violence by 9% in other states.

Drunk driving has been a problem in our state for many years. It costs our state too much money and far too many innocent lives. Last year, I co-authored the bill creating the 24/7 Sobriety Pilot Program, and I was very pleased when Racine County was chosen as one of five counties to pilot the program.  Although there is no silver bullet, the 24/7 Sobriety Program is a promising tool that has been proven to be effective in other states and goes beyond just punishing drunk drivers. To enter the program, offenders must make the choice to participate and pay for the program out of their own pocket. Under the program repeat drunk drivers are given twice daily alcohol tests and routine drug testing to make sure they are staying sober.

I wrote this legislation to help save lives in our state. I believe this bill will benefit all Wisconsinites by helping to reduce drunk driving, helping those who want to stay sober do so, and even reduce other crimes that often go hand-in-hand with alcohol abuse. I also designed the bill so that we can enjoy these benefits without spending any taxpayer money. This is a win-win, and I am looking forward to seeing results from the pilot program and hopefully expanding it to other counties in the future.

$192K Grant Coming to Burlington

Wisconsin's economic development agency announced this week that it has awarded nearly $1.4 million to six cities to go toward improving their downtown areas. Burlington will be given $192,833 of that amount to assist in the redevelopment of the Keuper Mercantile building.

The building, which used to house the Schuette-Daniels Furniture store before it went out of business after a fire in 2014, is slated for redevelopment. The grant will go toward the redevelopment of the building into office and retail space, including a new community co-working space to foster small business creation and growth in the community. I am pleased to see this money coming to Burlington and am glad to see this historic building being revitalized.

Thank You for Coming to My Office Hours

Thank you to everyone who came down to see me during my office hours at the Racine County Fair. It is a real honor to represent the 21 Senate District, and the most important part of my job is connecting with the great folks in our communities.

When I wasn't holding office hours I had a lot of fun working the corn booth, volunteering at the cream puff booth with Norway Town Chair Jean Jacobson, and judging the soup competition. I attend the fair every year and am always impressed by the wonderful people, events, food and fun. I hope you were all able to make it down and that you enjoyed it as much as I did!

In the District

On Thursday August 4, I had the honor of recognizing Ralph Malicki for his commitment to veterans. Ralph (pictured above with his son, Alex and mom, Trudy) is the owner of the Piggly Wiggly on Washington Avenue in Racine. This is the third anniversary of the Veteran's Cafe, which his family sponsors every Thursday morning. I was proud to present Ralph with a plaque honoring his commitment to our veterans, and for his contributions to our community.
