Celebrating Our Nation's Flag

On Tuesday, we celebrated National Flag Day which commemorates Congresses adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. You may not know that this holiday originated right here in our great state.

On June 14, 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand, a 19 year old teacher at Stony Hill School, placed a 10-inch, 38-star flag in a bottle on his desk and assigned essays on the flag and its significance to his students. After 31 years of crusading by Dr. Cigrand, President Woodrow Wilson on June 14, 1916, proclaimed the national observance of Flag Day.

National Flag Day is an important reminder of what our nation's flag stands for. Let's take time to be thankful that we live in the greatest country on earth, and give thanks for the many Americans that have sacrificed to uphold our flag and the freedom, liberty and hope it stands for.

Congratulations, Burlington Demons!

The Burlington Demons fought there way to a 6-4 win over Arrowhead on Wednesday, June 15, to win the WIAA Division 1 State Baseball Championship.  The team faced a 4-2 deficit entering their final at-bat, but the Demons rallied for a spectacular victory.

The game is the capstone of the greatest season in Demon history, and marks the first state championship for the team. Congratulations, Demons- you should all be very proud!

Free Dental Care for Veterans

On June 25th, Aspen Dental practices in Wisconsin sill be providing free dental care to veterans. This is part of their 2016 National Day of Service, and offices in Oak Creek and Mount Pleasant are participating. During appointments, volunteer dentists and teams will provide services including fillings, extractions, and basic denture repair. Space is limited, so veterans should call 1-844-AspenHMM to schedule an appointment. Please help spread the word if you know a veteran who is in need of these services.

62% Reduction in Chinook Salmon Stocking Proposed

The Lake Michigan Committee is proposing a 62% reduction in Chinook salmon stocked into Lake Michigan starting spring, 2017. This would represent a 56% cut to WI fisheries. The proposal comes after three years of research and monitoring, and is in response to historically low population of alewives (the key prey fish for Chinook salmon).

There will be a public meeting on June 30 to discuss whether to accept, amend, or reject the changes. The meeting will be at the UW-Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences Ballroom from 6-8 pm. Interested parties are encouraged to attend. For information regarding the meeting, click here. For more information regarding the proposed stocking reduction, click here

Polzin Park Dedication

On Wednesday, June 15, I had the pleasure of attending the dedication of Polzin Park, across from Mount Pleasant's first COP House. The park was dedicated to former Racine Police Chief Richard Polzin (above with his wife Sheila) who brought the concept of community-oriented policing (COP) to the city.

This is a wonderful project dedicated to a great individual who has done so much for the community through his passion and dedication. The COP program has benefited lot of neighborhoods since Polzin began it 25 years ago, and this beautiful park will be a safe place for families and kids to enjoy for years to come.
