Don't Miss First Ever "Open House Racine County"

We all know the amazing places that Racine and Kenosha Counties have to offer, and now residents and visitors can learn even more about these great attractions at the first ever "Open House Racine County." Racine County residents and visitors are invited to experience this free, one-day celebration of interesting places, fascinating architecture and local history on Saturday, May 21. The event is made possible by a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, and will allow free access to more than 40 buildings and sites across the county.

Sites to visit include the Wind Point Lighthouse grounds, Racine Heritage Museum, and internationally famous Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings such as Wingspread. The tour offers participants the chance to learn the stories behind these area gems and learn more about their rich histories. Event organizers are hoping to draw 5,000 visitors for an estimated economic impact of $206,000.

Visit Open House Racine County's website for a full list of places to see, build your itinerary for the day, and learn more about this great event.

Tourists Spending Up in Racine and Kenosha Counties

More great news on the tourist front- both Racine and Kenosha Counties saw an increase in tourism spending in 2015. More tourism not only means more dollars coming into our communities, but also means jobs and income for residents making this great news for our district!

In Racine County, tourism generated 232.3 million in 2015. This is a 1.9% increase over 2014, and a record for the County! This marks the 4th straight year of record setting numbers, but the good news doesn't stop there. Traveler spending is also a significant source of employment, and the tourism industry in Racine County supported 4,091 Racine County jobs and contributed $108.6 million in personal income last year. Those local jobs generated $26.9 million in state and local taxes.

In Kenosha County, tourists spent $196.6 million last year, an 8.1% increase over 2014. Tourism in Kenosha County generated $22.1 million in state and local tax revenues and $14.8 million in federal tax revenues last year. According to the Kenosha Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, without the state and local taxes generated by tourism, each Kenosha County household would need to pay an additional $360 in taxes to maintain the current level of government services. The tourism industry in Kenosha County supported a total of 3,164 jobs in 2015, resulting in 80.8 million in personal income.

It is wonderful to see an increase in folks visiting our communities, and enjoying all we have to offer in Racine and Kenosha Counties. From our beautiful coast line and parks to the great businesses and historic landmarks- we have a lot to be proud of in the 21st Senate District!

147 Jobs Coming to Burlington

The Racine County Economic Development Corp., and the City of Burlington announced this week that Applied Materials Solution plans to create 147 jobs in Burlington in the next few years. According to RCEDC, the company considered several locations in northern Illinois and southeast Wisconsin before purchasing 1956 S. Pine Street. I love to see our communities thriving, and am excited to have a new company growing in our area!

In the District

On Tuesday, May 17, I was humbled to attend the Racine County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony in memory of the officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. The event is part of National Police Week, which recognizes the service and sacrifice of U.S. Law Enforcement and pays respect to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice .

At the event, I met John Anderson III (pictured above). John is a World War II veteran who lost his father, John Anderson the II, when he was killed in the line of duty in March 1935. It is because of the selfless dedication of men and women like John's father that our families are safe today. Our sincere appreciation goes out to all the officers, and their families, who have given everything in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
