Productive Senate Session Comes to an End

The busy Senate Session came to a close on Tuesday, with months of hard work paying off. With over 80 bills passing on Tuesday alone, you can't say the legislature doesn't get anything done. Although you never get everything you want in this process, I was honored to have so many of my bills approved by the legislature this year. I am proud to say five more of my bills cleared the Senate this week and are on their way to the Governor.

Among these bills are measures to save patients time and money by allowing physical therapists to take x-rays and closing a loophole that allowed hit and run drivers to flee the scene after striking a pedestrian. I am also proud that Alicia's Law, which helps rescue children from torture and abuse and puts child predators behind bars, cleared its final legislative hurdle this week. Lastly, the Locker Room Privacy bill I authored with Representative Kerkman also passed on Tuesday. We authored this in response to the hidden-camera case in Kenosha County in which women and children were secretly video-taped in local locker rooms. It sickens me that many of the victims in this case were children, and this bill increases penalties for these crimes.

I am glad that my colleagues joined me in supporting these important bills, and of all that we were able to accomplish during this legislative session. As always, there are some bills that did not make it across the finish line this year. I will continue to work on these issues. Even though this legislative session has come to an end, the work is just beginning. I have already started working on bills for next session and will continue to work diligently to grow our economy, increase public safety, protect the vulnerable and make government more efficient. As always, if you have an idea for legislation, please share it with me. I look forward to working with you, and for you, in the next legislative session and beyond.

Welcome to Our Senate Scholar

I was pleased to welcome our Senate Scholar, Sarah Verzal, who spent the week getting an up-close view of the Legislature. Sarah, who is a junior at Westosha Central High School, was one of only 22 students chosen for this highly competitive program. The students gain experience in policy development, constituent relations, and processing legislation while getting hands-on experience. Sarah is incredibly bright, and I was very impressed by her poise and knowledge. Fine job, Sarah!

In the District

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos and I had the honor of presenting a grant to the Town of Dover on Monday, March 14. The $53,943 grant was awarded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, and part of money set aside in the last budget to help fund services for the Union Grove Veterans hospital. I am very pleased these dollars are going toward this important cause.

On Monday, March 14, I attended the Annual Joint Union Grove Area Consortium Board Meeting at Raymond School. Representatives from Union Grove High School, Union Grove Grade School, Yorkville School, Raymond School and Kansasville School were all present. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to attend the meeting and to hear about what is going on in the consortium. We really have a great group of people working for our kids.
