Senate Passes Pro-Life Bills

The busy legislative session continues, and it has been another week packed with committee hearings, constituent meetings and a full Senate floor session. Among the many things accomplished were two key pro-life bills that passed the full Senate on Wednesday. I was proud to support the passage of both of these important measures:

Senate Bill 238: This bill requires family practice clinics, when billing the Medical Assistance program for reimbursement of a prescription drug, to bill only the actual acquisition cost of the prescription drug plus the dispensing fee. This is a loophole that has been exploited by certain entities, and Wisconsin will save millions of dollars by closing this loophole.

Legislators are elected to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars, and reining in the fraudulent over-charging by family planning clinics is part of that duty.
I was proud to vote in support of this bill which is supported by Pro-Life Wisconsin, Wisconsin Family Action and Wisconsin Right to Life.

Assembly Bill 310: This bill diverts grant funds under Title X of the federal Public Health Service Act away from Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers, putting them instead toward the Well-Woman Program and public entities, including state, county, and local health departments and clinics that do not offer abortion.

During my campaign, I pledged to support pro-life legislation, and I believe that no taxpayer dollars should be going to Planned Parenthood. In 2011, my colleagues and I voted to eliminate all state funding to Planned Parenthood, and I am proud to support the diversion of federal funds away from Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers as well.

I am proud to be able to support these measures and I will continue to be vigilant on pro-life issues.

School Safety Bill Gives Parents Transparency

On Thursday, the Senate Committee on Education held a Public Hearing on Senate Bill 470 which I authored to give parents information about the safety of the schools in our state.

When a parent is choosing a school, and a school environment for their child, it is important that they have as much information as possible. They want to know the academic success of the school, the graduation rate, the school's success in closing the achievement gaps,  and how the schools' students perform on standardized tests.

All of this information is available on the school report card, but one item that many parents feel is most important is missing from the equation - school safety. It is common sense that feeling safe in school is a key element of learning. If a child feels unsafe, he or she may have a difficult time concentrating and processing information. For that reason, parents should know about the safety of the environment that their child is learning in.

To ensure parents have access to this information, I authored Senate Bill 470. The bill requires schools to provide a report of law enforcement calls for a variety of different crimes to their school board. These calls will then be displayed on the school report cards, along with measures of academic success.

Adding safety information to school report cards just makes sense. Parents deserve to have all the facts when they are making the important decision of where to send their children to school, and safety is an important factor in this decision.

Mourning the Loss of April Weatherston

Heaven gained an Angel this week when April Weatherston, wife of Representative Tom Weatherston, went home to be with our Lord after a short battle with multiple myeloma.

April was a person you would always enjoy being with. Her positive attitude and delightful smile were contagious. She loved life and gave of herself without expectation. I know I am a better person because she was a part of my life and Mary Jo and I are blessed to have her forever as an extended part of our family. Our thoughts and prayers are with my brother Tom and his family. "LYB"
