Senate Bill 35 Passes Senate
Eliminating the 48-Hour Waiting Period for Handgun Purchases  (Click to watch Senate Floor Speech) This week, the Senate passed my bill to eliminate the 48-hour waiting period on handgun purchases. When the waiting period became law in 1976, a background check consisted of hand-searching 3x5 index cards in one community. Today, a background check is done at the click of a button – and searches dozens of databases nationwide. Statistically, the waiting period doesn’t make any difference in crime or suicide rates and there is evidence that it may increase crime and harm potential victims. I was glad to see bi-partisan support for the bill in the Senate. After passage in the Assembly, the bill will be sent to the Governor. Governor Walker has already stated his support for the legislation.

Congrats...Wilmot Wins National Academic Decathlon Title! I was happy to adjourn Session on Tuesday, April 21st in Honor of the Wilmot Decathlon Team for winning the National Academic Title. Posters in the Rotunda I enjoyed meeting with five constituents of the 21st District during the 12th Annual Posters in the Rotunda on Wednesday, April 22nd. The event celebrates the cutting edge research being done by students at our Universities. Each of the students I met with are students of UW-Parkside. 
Kyle Zawacki spoke to me about biodiesel simulation.
Brian Liesch explained his poster regarding the spatial variability of sediment and glacial processes on a recessional moraine of the Lake Michigan lobe.
Robin Feltman described projection mapping of non-uniform surfaces.  Nate Eisner's spoke on a Kenosha Civil War Museum App.  Andrew Foxworth's project was a Kenosha Area Transit App.

In the District  I was happy to join Representative Samantha Kerkman (R-Salem) and Teri Jendusa-Nicolai (domestic abuse survivor and advocate) at the "Back the Badge" event to support police, which was held at the Bandshell at Pennoyer Park on Saturday, April 18th.

Congrats...Chancellor Deborah Ford Named a Woman of Influence! University of Wisconsin- Parkside Chancellor Deborah Ford recognized by Milwaukee Business Journal  This is the 16th Year the Milwaukee Business Journal has recognized outstanding women from Milwaukee's Business Community. It is no surprise that Chancellor Ford received the honor for her leadership in education. I recently had an opportunity to meet with Chancellor Ford during her April 22nd visit to the Capitol as part of the annual Posters in the Rotunda event.

Armenian Reception at the Capitol
I was happy to co-host the reception commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide. It was nice to meet so many Armenian constituents during their visit to the Capitol. The Legislature passed a Joint Resolution which I co-authored with Representative Thomas Weatherston (R-Caledonia) designating April 24 of each year as “Wisconsin Day of Remembrance for the Armenian Genocide of 1915 to 1923”. Visiting the Capitol  On April 23rd, I met with Kim Bartlett (Racine) during the Music Therapists Legislative Day at the Capitol.  Tony Beer (Pleasant Prairie) stopped in to visit during the Wisconsin Hotel and Lodging Association Legislative Day at the Capitol.
