UPDATE: AB 10 Heading to the Governor's Desk

Senate Bill 9/ Assembly Bill 10, the personal jurisdiction bill I have co-authored with Representative Amy Loudenbeck is heading to the Governor's Desk.  The bill strengthens legal protections for victims of domestic abuse, child abuse, or harassment, and empowers Wisconsin law enforcement officers and courts to extend protections to these victims from abusers even if they do not live in Wisconsin.  This measure provides security for victims who receive threatening or harassing messages via digital communication such as social media, email, or text.  We live in a highly mobile, high-tech society and unfortunately harassment does not stop at state lines.  We want to protect our citizens to the best of our ability.  Victims of harassment should not have to second guess whether Wisconsin law can shield them from an abuser.  This bill clarifies our current statutes and strengthens victims’ rights.  Our proposal has received wide bipartisan support.  I am happy to see after four years of hard work, this legislation is finally heading to the Governor for his signature.

Meet our Intern
As her first assignment, my legislative intern Breeanna Brock was asked to provide a biography...meet Breeanna!

My name is Breeanna Brock, but normally go by Bree.  I’m a freshman at UW-Madison studying political science and legal studies on a pre-law track.  My mom was in the USAF so I was born down in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma but went to Laconia High School in Rosendale near the Fox Cities (known for its ice cream and speeding tickets).  I’m a huge history buff, especially regarding the founding fathers and constitutional convention, but I also love learning anything about American history. I’ve been in dance since I was three, and teach youth classes at the YMCA and assistant coach a junior cheer team.  My mom and little brother, Nick, live back in Oklahoma with our two rescued dogs, George and Shimmy.  We spend a lot of our time hiking with our dogs out in the bluffs and barbequing.  So far, working with Senator Wanggaard and his office has been an exciting opportunity and I have learned so much about the legislative process in Wisconsin Legislature.  I’m so thankful for this experience and I can’t wait to see what the future will bring!

Visiting the Capitol

On Tuesday, March 17th, Representative Samantha Kerkman and I met with Karen Weber of Pleasant Prairie and Darren and Marcus Hillcock of Salem who visited the Capitol as part of the Disability Advocacy Day.

On Wednesday, March 18th, I received a surprise visit from 21st Century Preparatory School in Racine.  I was happy to speak to them in my office and tour the Wisconsin State Senate.  They are doing a great job preparing the kids for their future.

I also had a chance to meet with a couple of folks visiting as part of the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Legislative Day.

I met with Dr. Mike Kaske (Twin Lakes), Dr. Lyndsay Knoell (Racine) and several Marquette Dental School students as part of the Wisconsin Dental Association Legislative Day.

I was able to meet with Penny Boileau (Brighton #1), Michael Fontier (Racine School Board), Lolli Haws (Racine Unified Superintendent) and Brett Hyde (Muskego/Norway) as part of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards Association Legislative Day.

I finished out the day by meeting with Pharmacists from the district and pharmacy students as part of Wisconsin Pharmacy Association Legislative Day.

SPEAK: Chiefs of Police Association

On Wednesday, March 18, I spoke to the Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Association as part of their Legislative Day in Madison.  As Chairman of the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, I spoke about legislative issues currently pending in the committee.

In the District

On Monday, March 16th, Representative Thomas Weatherston and I attended a Department of Transportation (DOT) legislative briefing in Sturtevant.  Southeast Regional Director, Brett Wallace, Southeast Deputy Director, Sheri Schmit and Michael Pyritz at the DOT provided information about upcoming transportation projects in the district.
