Wanggaard Recognized for Commitment to Veterans

I was humbled to receive a Certificate of Recognition on October 23 from the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs. The award was presented by Secretary John Scocos in recognition of a strong commitment to Wisconsin Veterans and their families.

The brave men and women in our military fight vigilantly to protect the freedoms that make America the greatest country on Earth, and they deserve our gratitude. I look forward to introducing a bill this winter in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs to improve services and operations for our veterans. I am very honored to receive this award, and I am grateful for the privilege to serve the heroes who selflessly serve our country.

 Red Ribbon Week

Last week, Kenosha County joined communities across the country to take a stand against drugs by celebrating Red Ribbon Week. On October 19, I had the honor of taking part in the opening ceremony to help kick off this awesome campaign.

Red Ribbon Week is dedicated to Enrique Camarena, a drug enforcement agent who was killed in 1985 by drug traffickers in Mexico.  In response to his death, angered parents across the country began wearing red ribbons to symbolize their commitment to being healthy and drug free. In 1988, the National Family Partnership sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Week.  The red ribbon began as a symbol of hope for people taking a stand against illegal drugs, and today it still stands as a symbol of Enrique’s belief that one person can make a difference in the fight against drugs.

Congratulations to Carson Doty (pictured above with Representative Kerkman and myself) for submitting the 2015 Kenosha County Red Ribbon Campaign: “Being Drug Free…Oh the Possibilities!” Carson's slogan was selected from about 2,400 entries and will be used throughout the year at a variety of events. She will be recognized at a brunch next April, where she will be awarded $50 cash and a trophy for developing the winning slogan. Great job, Carson!

 In the District

On Saturday, October 24, I had the opportunity to talk about local government issues at the Kenosha Council of Governments Meeting. At the meeting, I got to hear about municipal and county issues from County Executive Jim Kreuser (pictured above with Representative Kerkman and myself) and Council members from the cities, towns and municipalities in Kenosha County.

Hearing directly from the the people and communities I serve is of the utmost importance and one of my favorite parts of my job. It was great to hear about what is going on in our local governments and discuss current economic development legislation. I look forward to continuing to visit the different municipalities I represent over the next few months.
