Tomorrow is Tax Freedom Day in Wisconsin

Madison, WI – Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) today announced that Tax Freedom Day in Wisconsin is Friday, April 19, 2019 according to the Tax Foundation, an independent tax policy nonprofit organization.

“Tax Freedom Day represents the amount of time when our taxpayers have earned enough money to pay our total tax bill for the year,” Marklein said. “This means that it has taken us nearly 109 day of work to pay the value of the taxes we pay to fund the government.”

“Tax Freedom Day is a day to recognize how much work it takes average taxpayers to fund our government,” Marklein said. “This is why I am deeply committed to being a responsible steward of our tax dollars. We must be aware of the burden government spending places on the citizens of Wisconsin.”

National Tax Freedom Day was April 16, 2019.  According to the Tax Foundation, in 2019, Americans will pay $3.4 trillion in federal taxes and $1.8 trillion in state and local taxes, for a total bill of more than $5.2 trillion, or 29% of the nation’s income.

Wisconsin’s Tax Freedom Day falls on Friday, April 19, 2019.  Wisconsin is the 35th State to reach Tax Freedom Day. This date is determined by the day when taxpayers in the state have collectively earned enough money to pay their federal, state and local tax bill for the year.

The earliest state to reach Tax Freedom Day is Alaska on March 25th and the last is Washington, DC on May 3.  Iowa reached Tax Freedom Day on April 15 (#28), Illinois reaches it on April 24 (#45) and Minnesota reaches it on April 25 (#46).

Marklein represents the 17th Senate District, which includes all or parts Grant, Green, Iowa, Juneau, Lafayette, Monroe, Richland, Sauk and Vernon counties. Marklein serves on the legislature’s budget-writing Joint Finance Committee and is Chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Revenue & Financial Institutions.
