Senator Howard Marklein Elected President Pro Tempore of the Wisconsin State Senate

MADISON, WI — State Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) was elected to serve as President Pro Tempore by his colleagues in the Wisconsin State Senate today.

“I am honored to serve as President Pro Tempore by my legislative colleagues,” Marklein said. “We have a tremendous opportunity to serve the people of Wisconsin in the new legislative session and I look forward to taking a leadership role.”

The President Pro Tempore assists the Senate President in managing the business of the State Senate and leading the body through the procedural process of legislative voting sessions (floor sessions).  It is one of six leadership positions that organize and direct the legislative agenda of the State Senate.  This position is outlined in Article IV, Section 9 of the Wisconsin Constitution, which specifies that “each house shall choose its presiding officers from its own members”.

Marklein will be formally sworn-in as President Pro Tempore during the Inauguration of the Wisconsin Legislature on January 3, 2017.
