Governor Signs Four More Marklein Bills Into Law
Legislation related to Welcome Sign in Mauston, EMS license plates, state tax laws and reforms.

MADISON – Governor Scott Walker Signed four bills authored by State Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) on Tuesday, April 3, 2018.

“The bills signed by the Governor accomplish common sense reforms,” Marklein said. “I am particularly proud of Act 229, which waives the specialty license plate fees for Emergency Medical Service (EMS) license plates in Wisconsin. Many of our rural volunteer EMTs and first responders have been paying for these license plates for years, even though they use them as part of their role in providing a service to our communities. This is good policy.”

The bills signed into law, authored by Senator Marklein include:

Act 229 - SB 360 – EMS License Plates - Brent Brown, a volunteer Firefighter and First Responder from Boscobel asked Sen. Marklein to author legislation to waive the $15 specialty license plate fee for Emergency Medical Services (EMS)-related license plates. Many first responders choose these license plates for their personal vehicles to help identify them when they respond to a scene. These plates are only given to active volunteers and must be surrendered when the volunteer retires from service. Act 229 waives the specialty license plate fee in thanks to the heroes in our community.

Act 232 - AB 716 – Municipal Welcome Signs – for Mauston – Act 232, which was championed by Representative Ed Brooks (R-Reedsburg), provides regulatory relief so that the City of Mauston may install the last of four unique welcome signs on State Highway 82. Act 232 treats official municipal welcome signs like directional or other official signs. This bill allows the installation of a municipal welcome sign in the right-of-way of a state highway on property that is within the municipal boundaries of that municipality.

Act 230 - SB 650 – Wisconsin Mississippi River Parkway Commission Technical Committee – Act 230 was drafted at the request of the Wisconsin Mississippi River Parkway Commission (WIMRPC).  The commission oversees the Wisconsin section of the National Great River Road.  This bill will statutorily add representation from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) to the Technical Committee of the commission. Tourism and the Department of Transportation (DOT) are members of the committee.

Act 231 - AB 259 – State Tax Law Alignment + Multi-state Tax Commission – Act 231 made several changes to state tax laws to update tax codes in order to level the playing field between government and taxpayers in audit situations. It is also updates state code to comply with federal tax code as a result of the recent Federal Tax Reform package.
