Hwy 154 Project to Begin in November Despite Governor’s Veto
Marklein’s efforts accelerate project to improve rural road
MADISON – State Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) today announced that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will accelerate the Hwy 154 state highway rehabilitation project to begin in November 2017, despite Governor Scott Walker’s veto of the project in the state budget.
“When I heard the news that the Governor vetoed a budget provision that would have accelerated the Hwy 154 road project, I was disappointed. But within 24 hours, I was told that the veto was because the DOT was able to start it sooner. The Department is able to accelerate the project and it will go out for bids as soon as November with work beginning in the spring,” Marklein said. “In this case, a veto was good news!”
Marklein worked to add the Hwy 154 project into the state budget because it is one of the worst non-backbone state highways in the 17th Senate District. The section of Hwy 154 to be addressed is in Sauk County and stretches from Loganville to the Richland County line. The budget provision was meant to accelerate the project from a 2020-2023 timeline to 2018-19 timeline.
“The Governor and DOT heard us loud and clear,” Marklein said. “We told them that the people in our communities want better roads and that many of our non-backbone state highways need to be repaired. I am proud of my work to bring this road to their attention and look forward to the project starting in early spring.”
