Senate Committee on Revenue, Financial Institutions, &
Rural Issues
This week I chaired my first committee meeting for the Senate
Committee on Revenue, Financial Institutions, & Rural Issues.
The State Senate is tasked with confirmation hearings for the
Governor’s appointees to the various state agencies and boards.
This meeting, we conducted the Confirmation Hearings of
Secretary Rick Chandler (Department of Revenue), Secretary Peter
Bildsten (Department of Financial Institutions), and members of
the Savings Institution Board and Deferred Compensation Board.
All appointees were confirmed by members of the committee
unanimously. I look forward to addressing various issues in this
committee in the future.

December Revenue Numbers
The Department of Revenue (DOR) recently released its
year-to-date revenue collections, including the month of
December. These numbers reflect the amount of General Purpose
Revenue (GPR) that the state has collected from corporations and
from general sales and use taxes for the first six months of the

Platteville & Monroe Named Best Places to
Start a Small Business
The Talent Tribune recently named the cities of Platteville and
Monroe two of the best places to start a small business in the
Midwest. In selecting these cities, the Talent Tribune took
three major factors into account when making their selections:
net small business growth, net small business employee growth,
and percent of employees that employ less than 20 employees.
The City of Monroe led the Midwest in concentration of small
businesses. 76.4% of all businesses in Monroe are considered
small businesses. The small businesses of Monroe have an
impressive growth of 2% annually. 72% of all businesses in
Platteville are small. The City of Platteville utilizes the
local University of Wisconsin-Platteville as a resource for its
small businesses.
Congratulations to Monroe and Platteville!
