Welcome to my e-update!

Following this e-update, my regularly scheduled e-updates will be sent out each Thursday at 11am. To suggest local events, articles and topics of interest to highlight in a future update, email my office at Sen.Ballweg@legis.wisconsin.gov.

Inauguration Day

On Monday, January 4th, I was inaugurated into the 105th Legislature. I was sworn in by Chief Justice Patience Roggensack in a private ceremony with my husband, Tom, and daughter, Becky.

I am very grateful to once again serve Central Wisconsin in the state legislature, but this time I will serve in the upper chamber as your new State Senator. I will continue to keep the feedback I receive from my constituents in mind as I begin to craft legislation and work on the budget with my Joint Finance colleagues.

In addition to serving on the Joint Committee on Finance, I will be the chair of the Committee on Agriculture and Tourism and a member of the Committees on Natural Resources & Energy and Human Services, Children & Families.

Staff Introductions

With the start of a new legislative session, I want to introduce my staff. They are who you will interact with if you contact my office. All of my staff members have been in my Assembly office previously at some point, so they might be familiar names if you have interacted with my office before.

L-R: David Specht-Boardman (Policy Advisor), Bethany Rasmussen (Chief of Staff), Senator Joan Ballweg, Ben Karbowski (Legislative Aide), Amanda Graham (Communications Director)

National Radon Action Month

Many of us are spending more time at home than ever before, which is why it is important our homes are safe. January is National Radon Month which brings awareness to the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that you can't see, smell or taste but can be a problem in your home. It can enter through cracks and openings in your foundation, around pipes and through dirt floors.

Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk. It is recommended that you test in the lowest lived-in level of your house. Contact your local county health department to purchase a test this month. Testing is easy, and it only takes a few minutes and can give you and your family peace of mind.

For more information on radon and how to reduce your risk, visit www.lowradon.org.
