Suicide Task Force Announced

Recently Speaker Robin Vos announced that he is creating a task force to study suicide in Wisconsin. According to the WI Department of Health Services, more than 700 Wisconsinites die by suicide each year. With a spike in teen suicides, suicides among our veterans and suicides related to our farmers, I applaud Speaker Vos for calling this bipartisan committee and will follow its work closely. The task force will travel around the state hearing from survivors and their families, advocates, mental health professionals and experts. The task force will hear their testimony and ultimately make policy recommendations for reducing the number of suicides in our state.

As vice chair on the committee on mental health I am concerned about the growing number of suicides in our state. I remain committed to increasing access to mental healthcare. Among legislation I have worked on includes increased funding for peer respite centers, increased funding to train country crisis intervention teams so health officials and law enforcement can better serve people in crisis and get them the immediate help they need, clarifying third party emergency detentions so loved ones can get help more quickly and creating a pilot program for a specialized dementia crisis unit.

Beware of WE Energies Scam

We Energies is warning consumers about a scam affecting our area. A caller claims to be from We Energies, and spoofing software may show We Energies name on your caller I.D. The caller claims you are behind on your bill or have a malfunctioning meter that must be replaced and the cost is rebated after installation. The caller tells you to buy a pre-paid Visa debit card and provides a number to call to provide the pre-paid card’s number.

These callers can be intimidating and attempt to frighten you, threatening to turn off your power and warning your power will be off for days if you do not comply. More than 100 people have reported this scam in the past few days alone and I personally have received three of these calls at my home. Click here to be re-directed to We Energies to learn more.
