The History of Memorial Day

Did you know that Memorial Days have been observed since the late 1860’s? Following the Civil War, various towns and cities would decorate the graves of fallen soldiers in the springtime.

In 1866, Waterloo, New York was declared the official birthplace of Memorial Day because it had hosted an annual community wide event.

In 1868, the leader of Northern Civil War veterans, General John Logan called for a nationwide day of remembrance to be known as Decoration Day, and chose May 30th.

In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May. The change went into effect in 1971 and declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

Please take a moment today to remember those who gave their all, so we might be free.
