MadisonAssembly Bill 55, also known as the “Rock River Trail Scenic and Historic Route bill” unanimously passed through the Assembly Committee on Transportation on Wednesday, April 10th.  This bipartisan piece of legislation, sponsored by State Representative John Jagler (R-Watertown) and State Senator Tim Cullen (D-Janesville), directs the Department of Transportation to designate and mark a route along the Rock River in order to increase public appreciation of the river and the historic landmarks along the river’s course.

“It’s great to see more attention being paid to promoting this wonderful natural resource,” Jagler said.   “With the opening of the new bicycle and outdoors shop on Main Street, to the growth of the annual Rockman Challenge triathlon event, the timing of this bill to help shine a light on the Rock River is fantastic. “

“I believe that this legislation will help attract tourists and boost the economy in communities along the Rock River” Jagler said.  “I am also happy to announce that the bill specifies that no Department of Transportation funds may be used for signs. The Rock River Trail Initiative will raise the funds to mark the route.”

The Rock River, which runs for 320 miles from Fond Du Lac County to the Mississippi River in Illinois, has just recently been designated into the National Water Trails System by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.  The bill is expected to reach the Assembly floor for a vote on April 17th.
