Thank You Afghan War Veterans

The fallout from President Biden's decision to hastily withdraw from Afghanistan has left many wondering if the blood spilled during our 20 year presence there was in vain. I don't believe it was. If you are a veteran reading this, know that the people of this country appreciate the sacrifices of all our veterans who fought.

Your efforts helped keep another horrific terror attack from happening on our soil. Because of you, we are not adding days of remembrance in addition to 9/11. Thank you for all you did.

Veterans Crisis Line

Many of us know someone that served in the War in Afghanistan. Please take a moment this week to check in on them. Some may be struggling with the aftermath of the events that have unfolded over the past week.

Let us remind them that they matter and that their service to our country was important and will not be forgotten. If you or someone you know is struggling through this tough time please let them know that there are resources out there.

The War Memorial Center of Milwaukee will host "The Afghanistan Conversation." This event will be a gathering for veterans, military and Gold Star families to discuss the impact of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. A panel of Afghanistan and Vietnam veterans will open the event, sharing their experiences, camaraderie of support and efforts of healing.

The first event will be on Monday, August 23, 2021 from 12:00 – 1:30pm. A second follow-up event is set to occur Monday, August 30, 2021 over the noon hour.

Following the presentations will be an opportunity for veterans to ask questions and interact in an open mic “town hall” type conversation with the panelist. Additional resources, veterans and organizations will be available to field questions and offer support for all attendees.

WIAA Continues to Deny Students

Last year, many parents transferred their sons and daughters to a school that was allowing in-person learning. Because of that, the WIAA is enforcing a rule that keeps students from playing sports if they are newly transferred. Even though the governor vetoed my bill which would have allowed these students to play, I have not given up the fight. If your child or the child of someone you know has been unfairly prohibited from engaging in school athletics this coming year, I want to know. Please reply to this newsletter and tell me your story.
