My staff and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and many blessings in the New Year!

Most Plunder-ful Time of the Year

As Christmas approaches, odds are you know of someone who has fell victim to a “porch pirate.” Over the last few years, theft of packages off front porches has become a more popular type of a crime. A study by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute estimates that 1.7 million packages are lost or stolen every day in the U.S.

Thieves are not just taking things won on Ebay or bought on Black Friday either, they’re also taking serious items such as prescription drugs. I've drafted a bill which will help law enforcement fight back and punish those that are stealing packages from homes. My legislation lowers the threshold for porch piracy to be considered a Class I felony.

Unless we take proactive measures, this type of criminal activity will only get worse as online shopping becomes more prevalent. Other states such as Georgia, Michigan and even California have taken steps to minimize this growing crime. I'm hopeful this legislation will pass in the coming months and we can add Wisconsin to the list of states that are pushing back on these crimes of opportunity.

Governor Releases Maps

Last week, Governor Evers submitted his maps for redistricting. His earlier efforts to pass maps drawn by the People's Maps Commission were rejected by even members of his own party earlier this year.

His response was to then draw new maps in secret without public input while accusing the Republicans of doing the same thing. The hypocrisy is palpable.

Due to his veto of maps that were passed by the Assembly and Senate, the courts will now be involved in the process. I will keep you updated on this as we move forward.
