Bill Advances to Assist New Library System for Jefferson, Waukesha Counties

Nass: Senate Bill 265 provides needed flexibility for both counties.

(release date 10/21/15)

Senator Steve Nass (R-Whitewater) was pleased with the State Senate’s bipartisan vote in favor of Senate Bill 265 that would provide requested flexibility for the new library system being formed by Waukesha and Jefferson Counties. The bill co-authored by Senator Nass and Representative Cody Horlacher will permit the new library board for the two counties to contain no less than 11 members instead of the previous minimum of 15 members.

“The two counties have worked cooperatively to form the new Bridges Library System in order to provide high quality services for users at an efficient cost for taxpayers. The final piece of the puzzle is changing state law to reflect the preferred board size of 11 members,” Nass said.

Nass noted that allowing for an 11 member board will create some cost savings, but it also addresses the difficulty that counties sometimes face in finding enough individuals willing to serve on library system boards. Officials from both Waukesha and Jefferson Counties are confident that an 11 member board for the Bridges Library System can meet the expectations of all citizens in effectively administering the services of this important institution.

“Senate Bill 265 should receive a vote in the Assembly next week and its final stop will be Governor’s Walker’s desk for his signature. I am confident this new law will be in effect no later than January 1st,” Nass said.
