System Tuition Freeze Key Component of Next State Budget |
Nass: Major mistake for UW System to oppose extension of
freeze. |
|
Senator Steve Nass (R-Whitewater), Vice-Chairman of
the Senate Universities and Technical Colleges
Committee, called on the UW System President and Board
of Regents not to make a terrible mistake in fighting
Governor Walker’s proposal to extend the resident
tuition freeze as part of the 2017-19 biennial state
budget. Since the tuition freeze was first enacted by
Governor Walker and the Republican Legislature in the
2013-14 academic year, the average UW System student has
saved $6,311 over four years. |
|
“Extending the UW System tuition freeze is a clear
choice for legislators; you can stand with Wisconsin’s
middle class families or you can bow to the desires of
out-of-touch university administrators earning six-digit
salaries. I will continue to stand with middle class
families and this issue will be fundamental for me in
the next budget,” Nass said. |
|
Nass again noted that prior to the Republican tuition
freeze enactment in 2013-14, the previous ten years saw
UW System officials victimize families and students with
an unjustified 118% increase in tuition. While at the
same time keeping the public and the Legislature in the
dark about the accrual of a nearly $1 billion reserve. |
|
“In recent days we have learned of repeated instances of
poor leadership in the UW System at UW-Stout with the
politically correct censoring of an historic painting
and at UW-Platteville with the counseling of students
for wearing three-blind mice costumes last Halloween.
With many examples like the two just mentioned, why
would anyone trust the judgement of these same
administrators on issues relating to tuition increases,”
Nass said. |
