Legislature in Extraordinary Session on Right To Work

Wisconsin is poised to become the 25th state to enact Right to Work.  This legislation ensures a worker’s right to determine for themselves membership in private organizations and has spurred economic benefits in job, wage, and business growth in dozens of states.

Last week, the Wisconsin Senate introduced Senate Bill 44, which prohibits labor organizations from requiring union membership as a condition of employment and prohibits requiring payments to labor organizations.  The measure was referred to the Senate Committee on Labor and Government Reform, of which I serve as chair.  Having passed through committee and the full Senate, it will now go before the Assembly tomorrow, Thursday, March 5th.  I hope you enjoy this special edition of The Nass Report.

Sincerely,

Wisconsin Is Ready For Right To Work

By Sen. Steve Nass

Every worker should be able to determine for themselves membership in private organizations.  Federal law supersedes state law in regard to the relationship of private sector employers and union organizations.  Federal law authorizes each state to determine whether or not a private sector employee will be required to pay union membership dues in order to maintain employment in workplaces represented by a union.

Currently, 24 states have enacted RTW laws based both on personal freedom principles and competitive economic considerations.  It’s my belief that a private sector employee should have the right to decide for themselves on the issue of membership in a private union organization.  I don’t oppose the existence of private sector unions for those individuals wishing to be members.  I do oppose forced membership and dues payment for individuals not wanting to be members.

Polling in Wisconsin has consistently shown broad public support for the enactment of RTW.  I would also point out that private sector unions still exist in the 24 states with RTW.
