(MADISON) – Wisconsin State Senator Patty Schachtner (D-Somerset) announced today that

Somerset native Alex Nelson has completed the 2019 Senate Scholar Program. The program provided high school students with a hands-on, up-close view of the Legislature. Senate Scholars gained experience in policy development, constituent relations, and media relations.

“I was honored to have Alex represent northwestern Wisconsin and learn more about the legislative process,” said Senator Patty Schachtner. “Young people are our future, and we need their voices represented in the policy debates that impact us all.”

While in the program, Senate Scholar Alex Nelson was introduced to many facets of the legislative process.  Alex also met with members of the governor’s staff, legislative staff, and the media. Alex then turned his knowledge into action. When the Senate was on the floor, Alex staffed the session under the direction of the Senate Sergeant at Arms. The week’s events culminated in a Senate Scholar committee hearing on a bill that Alex helped draft.
