Statement from Senator Chris Larson on Passage of Expanded Strip Search Authority

MADISON – Senator Chris Larson issued the following statement regarding the passage of Senate Bill 248.

“Just a day after a $5 million settlement for abuse of power by police in Milwaukee in conducting illegal strip searches and body cavity searches, Republican leaders pushed a bill through the Senate that will expand the authority for police officers to perform these searches.

“As Democrats call for reforming our criminal justice system, ending the militarization of police, and stopping the mass incarceration of our neighbors, Republicans once again prove how misguided their priorities are. Their answer to overcrowding in correction facilities is to literally strip down low-level offenders – as well as those simply detained – in an effort to make it ‘safe’ for them to be thrown into an overcrowded cell.

“Senate Bill 248 shows a complete disregard for our basic rights and freedoms and ignores the hard lessons learned from the recent abuse of power. Today, legislative Republicans stripped our neighbors’ rights away.”
