SEN. LARSON STATEMENT REGARDING U.S. DOJ INVESTIGATION OF PUBLICALLY-FUNDED VOUCHER SCHOOLS IN WISCONSIN

MADISON – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chris Larson issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Justice’s investigation into documented complaints of discrimination against students with disabilities in publically-funded voucher schools:

“Allegations of discrimination and mistreatment of students with disabilities in publically-funded voucher schools are extremely alarming and troubling.  Unfortunately, it’s not surprising that Republican legislators who have fought tooth and nail against basic voucher accountability standards and safeguards for 24 years are now trying to bully their way into stopping an investigation of such deplorable complaints.

“Whether it be turning a blind eye to allegations of disgraceful treatment of students with disabilities or defending state-sponsored suppression and discrimination, Wisconsin Republicans have displayed a pattern of blatant disregard for our basic freedoms, values, and investments.

“Access to quality, discrimination-free education is a freedom and right that  every child deserves.  To that end, my Democratic colleagues and I will keep fighting to ensure that Wisconsin’s educational investments are in an accountable, discrimination-free system so that every child can obtain the knowledge and skills to succeed in life.”
