Statement of Senate Democratic Leader Chris Larson on the Striking Down of Wisconsin’s Transparent Campaign Finance Law

MADISON – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chris Larson released the following statement regarding the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals striking down significant portions of Wisconsin’s transparent campaign finance law:

“Today freedom and democracy took a harsh blow in Wisconsin. Common sense campaign finance laws were in place to protect our state from corruption and undue influence from money and special interests.

“This ruling eliminates the freedom for Wisconsin voters to know who is filling the airwaves before political elections to influence outcomes. Understanding who is delivering an opinion in an advertisement or at the door provides voters with the ability to judge the validity of an argument for themselves. Allowing outside groups to buy Wisconsin elections will drown out the voices of our neighbors and hurt our communities large and small.”
