Statement on Governor Walker’s Education Budget Deficit
MADISON – The following is a statement from Senate Democratic Leader Chris Larson on Governor Walker’s announcement that he would leave Wisconsin's public education system in deficit.
“After cutting the education budget by $1.6 billion last session, a paltry 1% increase in the current budget will do little to reverse the cuts already felt in school districts across Wisconsin. Governor Walker cannot whitewash the historic cuts to education with a tiny increase in the following budget.
“Future generations deserve to enjoy Wisconsin’s tradition of strong public education. We must adequately provide for the current and next generation of workers in order to close the skills gap and that will not occur without a strong reinvestment in our public education system top to bottom.
“Wisconsin’s education budget still has a deficit of over $600 million and Wisconsin’s middle class families will pay the price.”
