Governor Gets Incomplete on Education Reform

Madison – State Senator Chris Larson (D–Milwaukee) released the following statement today in response to Governor Walker placing the requests of special interests ahead of the needs of our school children, their parents, and taxpayers.

“With his signature on Senate Bill 461 today, Governor Walker broke another promise and missed a valuable opportunity to create genuine, comprehensive reform in our neighborhood schools.

“This legislation, initially proposed by Governor Walker, was supposed to increase our children’s reading scores, forge more effective educators, and enhance educational accountability and transparency at all schools receiving taxpayer funds. However, when everything was said and done, parents and students will be left in the dark as voucher schools were exempted from following the accountability provisions recommended by the Task Force.

“Our neighbors value having factual information before making a decision. We scrutinize the nutrition labels on the food we buy, research consumer reviews before purchasing a new phone or car, and even analyze critiques of new movies before making the trek to the theater. All parents and students deserve that same level of transparency and accountability when it comes to something as vital as our children’s education.”
