Statement on Today's Court Ruling Limiting Women's Reproductive Freedom

MADISON – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chris Larson released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that will negatively impact women’s freedom to obtain vital health coverage:

“Today, the U.S. Supreme Court continued a disturbing trend.  It apparently wasn’t enough that corporations are treated as people by the courts, but they now get to have religious rights that trump the individual freedoms of people.
“Women have the right to make personal decisions regarding their lives, and nothing – especially corporations – should be able to interfere with this basic freedom. Today’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court will allow corporate intrusion into these very personal decisions and will limit the health care freedom of women throughout Wisconsin and across the country.
“People throughout Wisconsin and across the nation are shocked and saddened by the lengths Republicans have gone to further an extreme national political agenda at the expense of the rights, privacy, and health of women.  Instead of working together to pave a path towards equity and fairness, they have continually been more focused on putting up roadblocks to individuals while making up new rights for corporations.
“Senate Democrats will continue our fight against efforts to restrict health care freedom and will continue to fight to ensure that women have the right to make personal health decisions, achieve equal pay for equal work, and obtain family-supporting jobs.”
