Judicial Decision an Affirmation of the Right to Vote
MADISON – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chris Larson released the following statement regarding the decision of U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman to strike down voter suppression laws enacted under complete Republican control.
“Today Wisconsin’s free and fair electoral system was defended from the overreach of one political party. The balance of power defined in the U.S. Constitution defends the freedom to cast a ballot no matter race, creed, gender, wealth or political persuasion. Despite the single-party rule continuing to pass extreme legislation attacking our most basic freedoms, our freedom to vote has been defended with today’s court ruling.
“This session, GOP legislators continued their attack on the freedom to vote. From limiting early voting hours for communities across Wisconsin to allowing election observers to stand an intimidating three feet from a voter, the GOP effort to restrict the freedom to vote has been persistent. Simultaneously, throughout the nation, GOP efforts to limit access to the polls continue to be struck down in the courts. Today’s ruling again demonstrates that politicians shouldn’t put forth artificial and politically-driven barriers to impede those exercising their freedom to vote."
