Statement of Senate Democratic Leader Chris Larsonon the Misplaced Education Priorities of this GOP Budget
MADISON - The following is a statement of Senate Democratic Leader Chris Larson on the misplaced priorities found in the current GOP budget.
"Last session, Governor Walker and his Senate allies passed a budget that included the largest cut to education in our state's history, slashing more than $1.6 billion from the education of our children.
"In this budget, Governor Walker told us he was increasing funding for public education by $129 million, but yesterday we found out that through budget gimmicks, the true increase to public education spending is about $39 million. At the same time, the governor's budget includes a $72 million increase in voucher funding to pay for students to attend unaccountable schools across the state.
"The huge disparity between public and private school funding only proliferates the values deficit created in the last budget. Wisconsin's working, middle class families depend on a strong, successful public education system to ensure our children are offered the opportunity to succeed in a 21st century economy. This budget fails them.
"I call on Republican members of the Joint Finance Committee to do the right thing and fix this egregious disparity. They must return the needed funds to our neighborhood public schools."
