We Got This Board Meeting

This week, Senator Taylor met with the Board of Directors of “We Got This” to discuss current projects and future plans for the organization. The program’s primary focus is to provide mentorship opportunities for Milwaukee youth. Utilizing urban agriculture and community gardening, program founder Andre Lee Ellis works to put the “neighbor” back in Milwaukee’s neighborhoods.

Ellis and numerous volunteers have taught participants lifelong lessons that can be translated to increased graduation rates, employment, and community safety. Located on Milwaukee’s north side, near 9th Street and Ring Ave, many in the community have noticed a decrease in area violence and crime. The data bares out that there are changes, as well. According to the Milwaukee Police Department, homicides in Milwaukee are decreasing and on track to be at their lowest since 2015. In 2015, 147 people were killed. To date, this year we have seen roughly 96 such deaths. Senator Taylor welcomes any work that is being done to change the outcomes for area youth and looks forward to her continued engagement with this game-changing organization.

MHS Holiday Dinner Giveaway

Senator Taylor was thrilled to join Milwaukee Health Services for their annual holiday food giveaway. In conjunction with a number of sponsors, the organization was able to provide more than 1,000 families with food during this season. While agency staff, Senator Taylor and countless volunteers handed out meals, the agency also offered flu shots and health screenings to participants. It was a rewarding experience and great to meet so many constituents and friends.

According to the Salvation Army, 17.4 million families go to bed hungry each night in the United States. Another 6.9 million families don't always know where their next meal is coming from. Therefore, we don’t have to wait until the holidays to help a neighbor in need. If you are interested in helping or need assistance, you are encouraged to contact Feeding America or the Hunger Task Force to learn more.
